Yurra is proud to have played a key role in the delivery of the LEAF (Leaf Enhanced Air Filtration) project, a strategic initiative aimed at mitigating airborne dust and enhancing the natural aesthetics of the West End district in Port Hedland, Western Australia.

As part of the project, approximately 150,000 local native plants were carefully selected and planted to form a seven-hectare vegetation buffer extending 2.3 kilometres. These species were chosen for their ability to capture dust particles, reduce air pollution, and contribute to the visual amenity of the surrounding area.

Yurra was engaged in managing ground works and delivering practical outcomes in collaboration with a broad network of stakeholders. This included the Town of Port Hedland, Curtin University, Greening Australia, Kariyarra Aboriginal Corporation, IBN Services (a First Nations business supplying plant stock), local community groups, and other partners.

In November 2024, ongoing maintenance and management of the site was officially transferred to the Town of Port Hedland. Despite minor impacts from Tropical Cyclone Zelia, the project continues to flourish, delivering both environmental and community benefits for residents and visitors alike.

The LEAF project reflects Yurra’s commitment to sustainable land management, community-focused outcomes, and the empowerment of Traditional Owners through meaningful participation in environmental projects across the Pilbara region.
